It was the first heavy snow in the last winter. The snow on some segments of 401 was not removed at that time, esp one segment near Milton. Some places were even covered with solid ice. The car in front of me brake suddenly and slipped from left to right. I hit my brake too. (I forgot that I should pump the brake in stead of hit it at that moment. ) Suddenly I felt the jolt from the brake pedal. It was the ABS! And my car was ok, straight ahead in the middle lane! I really thank my LG made the decision when we bought that car.

btw, when u drive on snow or icy road, you'd better pump the brake in stead of hit it, if you dont have ABS. Plus, have a good control of your wheel. :-)

      在正常情况下,ABS并不起什么作用,只有在emergency的时候,ABS就会起作用了.
      例如,当你遇到紧急情况(如地上有冰什么的)需要刹车时,当你踩刹车后,如果没有ABS,就会造成四轮锁死的现象,那时你就无法通过方向盘来控制轮胎来转向,这样就可能车子打转什么的.当然师博会教,要脚一踩一放,但是人脑的反应没有机器快,所以当有ABS的时候,它会帮你做到脚一踩一放的效果,这时你就可以通过方向盘来控制方向,车子就不会冲出公路或是别的什么了.

      申明,本人不是高手,只是昨天才上了第一堂学车课,课上听来的就写下来了,不对的请多多指教
      • You are right. ABS is only useful on wet or slippery road. It has no effect on dry clean road. In fact, it will make the break distance longer than without it.

    • I think you will need it if you plan to drive in winter. It saved me when I drove on 401 last December. It was my first time to drive in heavy snow. I can never forget it.

    • 出于安全方面考虑是有必要的。因为我们每天都要上下班,交通事故是存在的最大的隐患,我觉得这方面的钱不应该省。我还有一件臭事呢。。。
      我到车行去买车,想试一试ABS,于是就开着车行的车上路了,当我开到一段车少的路段时,就来了一个急刹车,我的车稳稳当当地停下了,这时,从后面传来一阵急刹车声,一辆小货车冲上了马路牙上。原来我忘了看后镜,是我的错。如果他不开上马路牙,肯定会撞上我的车。于是我又点头又赔不是,好在那个司机也是一个好脾气,嘴上小生唠吧唠叨了几句(我听不清楚,我想他肯定是骂我呢)就开走了。我呢,当然就买了有ABS功能的车。

But things are different during an emergency break. Without the ABS, the tires will simply slip ahead because the break has completely locks them down. Once the tires slip, it becomes a pure friction between the road and the spot of the rubber that touches the road. With ABS, the tires are in a stop-rotate-stop circle. This leverages both the friction of the rubber, as well as the grasp abality created by the threads on the tires. With the tires rotation speed decreases, the force of the friction increases as a function of time. So the more speed you start with, the better breaking distance you will have. I've seen the breaking test from Chevy for the same car with and without the ABS before. That's what I learned from.

          It's true that the situation is not always straightforward. But I think I've written more than what that URL has said, and warrants a better clarification. :-)
