Telling the truth is always wise

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛When I first came to US for an interview, I told the customer officers that I was going for an interview. The first one was very rude and asked: "Are you going to stay there if you get the job?" I looked into his eyes and said: "I'm only going for an interview. It isn't illegal, is it?" I also showed him my round trip ticket. The guy was unhappy and gave me a lesson on the need to get a proper visa to work in US if I got an offer. For obvious reason, he gave me only two days to stay in US, which was fine for me. The second officer was very nice and said "good luck for your interview."

I used the "telling the truth" strategy because a friend told me his story and I believe in this approach. My friend went for an interview and was denied entry because he told the officers he's visiting. The officers told him frankly that they didn't like him to go for an interview. But they would let him go if he had told the truth. After all, there's nothing wrong with a job interview. You are not guaranteed a job. Even you get an offer, it's not the customer officers' responsibility to decide whether or not give you a visa.

    • i would think u'd better say just visiting.
        • i don't think us immigration officer will like to hear that you are going there try to take jobs from american.
            • i don't think u need to prove too much for leisure visiting..:) at least we still have freedom to do so. anyway, it's easier to prove if u r going to big cities, but for small city, u probably want to have some reason.

    • Thanks for your infos. I know I am not guaranteed a job offer, although I've been required to go to us for a interview, but the chance of getting the offer is high, right? kind of worry about it.
      • I think you misunderstood me. I didn't refer to your chance of getting an offer, because I didn't anything about you.
When I planned to renew my TN visa, I felt bad about having to tell the customer officers that I didn't have a plan for staying at my current job permanently. My American colleagues told me not to worry about it, because theoretically I really couldn't tell if I would be guaranteed tenure, although almost everybody would get it.
