It seemed that Tiger's advice is more from his experience. therefore it might be more valuble. This is why my co-worker decides to live in NJ instead of NYC.

1. You need to pay 3% more sales tax in NYC.
2. He can get the train(PATH) in and out up to 33rd street. He felt like the train is convenient and cleaner than the subway.
3. Traffic is better if you want to drive up and down to other cities.

He finally picks a place in Jersy City. But the city itself is hypersensitive as far as neighboughoods go(somewhere is extremely bad and next door could be fairly good.). I remember it's one of the worst in the state in terms of safty.

Weenhawken and Hoboken in NJ seems to be the most demanded places by New Yorkers who want to stay out.

Anyway, I think it's hard to say which one is more suitable for you till you get in there and feel it by yourself.

Any one living in NYC or used to living in NYC? I want to ask information
of renting a room in NYC. I will start a new consulting job at 50 st. in
Manhatten. Where should I find a cheap and safe place?

I like to rent a room (shaing bath and kitchen) in someone home
    (Chinese family).

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Carleton
    • Get across the river and find a place in NJ. Lots of peple do that.
      • Are you in GTA? If yes, could I call you? Thanks
    • when you get to NYC, go to buy a chinese newspaper, 世界日报,then you will find a room in Queence. Try to find a room in Elmhurst or Flushing.
      • How do you think woodside? Thanks
        • woodside is cheaper, but it will take longer time going to Mahhatton, long waiting time in Subway station. It is not so convenient.
          • By reading map
it seems that 50st in Manhattan is more close to Woodside than to Elmhurst or Flushing. Please be advised.

Also how do you think Brookly between 6-12 Ave? Someone said there is safe.

            More advice is appreciated.
            • Brooklyn is also a good place now. The renting will be lower than Queence now. So you can select that place now. Good Luck!
              • In your opinion, if I work at 5th Ave/40 St, where should I get a room in terms of price, convenience, safty among Queence, Brookly and river NJ side?
                • Living in NJ is more expensive than living in Queence or Brooklyn. If just starting to work, Qeence and Brooklyn is first choice.
                  • Thanks for the advice. I also heard living NJ has to pay commute tax.

                      • Apartments in Jersey City are nice but so expensive. If I can find a room in a house in Weenhawken, I think price will be much cheaper.
I have to make a decision before I start. It is no way for me to understand location efficiently just by looking and feeling. This is the reason why I need your folks inputs and advice.
