周一TTC罢工取消

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛A T.T.C. strike that would抳e crippled the city, caused traffic chaos, and left thousands of people who rely on the system in the lurch, has been averted.

After last minute negotiations that went on for hours at a Richmond Hill hotel Sunday, the Amalgamated Transit Union and the city抯 transit commission announced they抎 reached a tentative agreement.

"I want to announce to the people of Toronto that there will be full T.T.C. service tomorrow morning," Bob Kinnear, president of the Transit Workers Union, A.T.U. Local 113, said.

The union returned to the bargaining table at the request of the government. Ontario抯 Ministry of Labour arranged the meeting after a sudden break in negotiations.

T.T.C. workers were set to walk off the job first thing Monday morning after their union rejected a $160 million offer that included a 2.75 per cent wage increase in the first year, a three per cent hike in the second, and a 3.25 per cent raise in the third.

揟he wage settlement we are recommending to our members, taken as a whole, is now in line with other public sector settlements in recent months,?the union chief explained Sunday.

But Kinnear said Sunday抯 breakthroughs were non-monetary matters, such as scheduling issues, a shortfall in the pension plan, and contracting out work.

揕et me make it clear that we have always recognized the importance of schedules to the travelling public. We like to be on time. But the disciplinary practices of the commission on this issue have been very unreasonable,?he noted.

The union will hold a membership meeting on Tuesday to go over the details of the agreement and members will take a vote on Thursday.

The exhausted T.T.C. chairman Howard Moscoe said these were by far the toughest negotiations he抯 ever been involved in.

揑 fee like a member of the bomb squad who half an hour ago was faced with a green wire and a red one, and thank God we cut the red wire,?he said. 揑t抯 been that tight.?BR>
Mayor David Miller said he was pleased that this agreement is consistent with that of other transit groups, such as GO.

揂nd of course I抦 pleased the Toronto Transit Commission will be running tomorrow,?he said. 揑t抯 the lifeblood of Toronto and it抯 not acceptable for that system to be shut down.?BR>
