Here is what you need to know:

(1) Most states require Canadian driver to get a local license within X number of days. Before that date, you can use your Canadian license as usual.
(2) The new law states that a visitor will not be given a SSN if applying for a driver's license is the only reason. As such, most states now do not require you to have a SSN to apply for a driver's license.
(3) In California, you have to pass both the written test and driving test as they don't acknowledge your Canadian experience. Make an appointment in advance to avoid the long wait. Google Californa DMV for more info.
(4) You must have a Ca driver's license in order to apply for insurance there.
