Early French Immersion is good or not? Should kid study French? Details inside. Welcome discussion.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I have to make decision if sending my kid to Early French Immersion program this September or not. I have following concerns:
1. With English and Chinese already, learning French will put too much burden on kid and that will reduce his time in English and therefore affect his English learning.
2. I don't know any French, there is no way to help him at home. Even right now, sometimes I feel difficult to decide which language (English or Chinese) I should use to read story to him?
3. If he has no strong language ability (I believe people have different level of ability for different thing), why don't I wait for 4 years later until Grade 3 to see if he should go to Middle French Immersion? By that time, I assume I have good idea if he has strong language skill, and his English is much better.
4. If he is not going to use this language in the future, like if he goes to States, is it a waste of time for learning French?

The advantage of learning French maybe:
1. The school load here in Canada is quite light, so it won't be a big burden on kid to learn French.
2. Learning one more language is good for mental development too (because of expanded vision, culture etc.) even he is not going to use it in the future as an adult.
3. Canada is bilingual, learning French is an advantage and won't affect his English learning because he is exposed in bilingul environment all the time (though not at home).更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • I've registered FI school for my daughter. I'm in the York region, so the program is start at grade 1.
Actually I've the same concern as you. The main reason I choose FI is I don't want my daughter feels bored at grade1 English shool, since she has already learned a lot grade 1 stuff and a little bit French from her school right now. And I also got very good feedback from my friends who sent their kids to the FI, not only one, and all of them don't know French at all. I took my daughter to visit the FI school in my area, and she likes it very much.
    • You can always pull your kid out of this program if you find there are potential problems. Besides:
I bet it is difficult to find the experienced Chinese parents who meet the following criteria:
      1. The kid has to go to FI at SK.
      2. The kid didn't quit this program in between.
      3. The kid has already graduated from high school.

The closest models I could find are my friend's two kids. Both of them got in to this program at SK. But one went to gift program at grade 6 and the other at grade 4. Both of them are doing great now. Both of them did have home work problems and were solved by asking classmates, classmates' parents and teachers. But they are gifted kids.

I also have friends sent their kids to this program at SK. But those kids now are at grade 2, grade 3 now. No long term effect yet and no guarantee they won't quit.
    • By the way, you could search the old discussion on this topic here.
Just remember one people here said "English, Chinese and Spanish will be most important languages in the future". Unforturnately we don't have Chinese and Spanish immersion here
    • Thanks for comments above. I guess not so many Chinese are interested in this topic.
