detailed plan is describled inside, thanks a looooot!!

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛AD And Exchange migration plan for AAA

The domain AAA.CA is in the forest of the parent company BBB; the mails are forwarded to the exchange server reside at AAA where all the AAA users have their mail boxes. AAA users use the BBB’s internet connection to go out to the internet and to access OWA they (AAA employees) go to https://mail.BBB.com and use their AAA.CA credentials.

The goal is to separate the AAA network from BBB’s network and migrate the AD and the exchange mail boxes to a new AD forest and exchange organization or migrate the domain into CCC forest and the exchange server to the CCC’s exchange organization. AAA will be using CCC’s internet connection to access the internet.

Option 1:

Create a new domain AAA.COM in a new forest and migrate all the users and computers from AAA.CA to this new domain then migrate the mailboxes and public folders to the new exchange organization under AAA.COM domain. Create external trust between AAA.COM and CCC.CA for the users to be able to access the resources between AAA and CCC

How to achieve this (migration Plan)?
What tools can be used?
What are the possible risks?
What are the drawbacks?

Option 2: (preferred)

Migrate the AAA.CA domain into the CCC forest and exchange server to the CCC exchange organization and cluster the exchange server for fault tolerance.

AAA:

Windows 2003 server Enterprise
Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition SP2
Windows XP pro
Office XP
AD users = 140
Mail boxes= 115
Mailbox Database size/ Public folder= 16GB

CCC:

Windows 2003 Server Standard
Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition SP1
Windows XP pro / Windows 2000
Office 2003/ office 2000
AD users = 125
Mail boxes= 140

        • Option 2 is much better!
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛As I understand, you don't have to keep domain "aaa.com". In another words, you will use ccc.com login identity instead of aaa.com. (Just assuming, there are 140 new employee)
          and
Domain "aaa.com" exist just as email domain.

          If I'm right, what I'll do :
          1, Backup exchange at ccc.com
2, Using Exmerge utility retrives all mailboxes at aaa.com
3, Creating new users at ccc.com
4, Loading mailboxes to ccc.com, using Exmerge.
          5, Mapping mailbox to user
6, Config exchange at ccc.com receiving aaa.com email
7, Point aaa.com MX record to new exchange server

The pfmigrate utility can be used in moving public folders to the new servers. (But I haven't use this utility in my production env.)

This is a very straightforward method to merge exchange server as I know. I am sure you can find others doing the same job. No matter what method you will use, always make a backup and test it in your testing envirement before touching your prodution.

If you find any other better way to do it, please share it with us.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
          • 不好意思,太忙了,刚刚有时间回帖。先谢谢了。我先按照你的在准备,有何进展或新的方法,向你及时汇报!! 多谢了
            • 其实做起来并不复杂,你先用几台机器做个模拟实验(用虚机也行),等实验好了再真正的做,不过试验和大规模做确实不太一样,会出现一些不可预知的问题,所以一定要做好备份。
    • 简单的做法
      采用第二种方法较好:
      1、做好相应的备份;
      2、使用ADMT工具迁移用户及邮箱;
      3、使用ExMerge迁移邮箱数据。
      真正迁移的时候会花很多时间的,而且要关闭用户;所以先做好方案,然后测试,最后在实施,祝顺利!
      • thanks a lot, I am focusing on ADMT right now, it takes time to get it, and there are so many rules to follow, a little bit confuse ^-^.
