I moved to Canada in 2003. I was a lawyer -graduated from one of the best universities in Mexico. During this time in Canada, I have faced lots of humiliations and racist remarks. I have a bestial job: I'm washing floors five days a week.
I applied to the Law School in Canada, but I didn't get a satisfactory answer; 8 universities rejected me. I don't know what to do. I can't work in my field in a country that needs immigrants to clean and build houses... they practically need slaves.
Canada needs immigrants to work for the Canadian born. Opportunities to newcomers are scarce. Professionals like myself are treated like garbage and the establishment keep us from suitable jobs.
I live in a small city. There are not many immigrants, and I have been discriminated and insulted by co-workers in a very unpleasant way. They think that being an immigrant and a Mexican means to be an uneducated person who didn't have anything in his home country.
My advice is if you are going to move to Canada, it's because you know that you are going to be a labourer. If you have a professional career in your country, don't move to Canada. If you decide to move here, choose a big city where many immigrants live and people are less racist, and you will possibly find people of your own country that you can count on.

Don't waste your energies in Canada, do like all the educated immigrants that come to this country. Get your Canadian passport and use it to get a visa in the US or Europe or another country where you skills are really needed. My sister got a PhD in Medical Sciences in Canada and has many years of Canadian experience in research, she learned her lesson very well and moved for a 100K job to the US instead of starving here with a 35K job after more than 10 years of Canadian study.
Canadians use you to get your money in exchange for a passport. My advise is to use the passport for a better life somewhere else.
At the end of the day, everything is about money. Canada needs your money as the economy here is death. You come here thinking that you will be getting a healthy economy but find out that we are an economy of McDonalds and Tim Horton's. No need to get stressed out or upset, you just need to use the Canadian government the same way the use you by using a piece of paper that says that you are Canadian to sell your skills to a better bidder.

I would like to add my comments on immigration. I landed based on point system meaning that I have skills useful to this country but on the other hand, I did not find a job. I do have good communication, research, language, teaching, editing and guiding skills. I have a PhD from one of the world's recognized institutes in chemistry and then had also been into teaching and research and had experience from Germany and US. I also got my degree certified as equivalent and paid 80 dollars for that. For immigration I spent around 2000 dollars.
I have lots of research experience and teaching experience and in spite of that could not get a job in Canada. In fact, I have presented papers in Germany, US, Poland, Scotland and Spain too. This is the only country where they do not provide jobs to foreigners and invite them only to give labor jobs. They prefer educated people who are even better knowledgeable than the local Canadians to do labor jobs because they want neat people who can speak and understand English. This act of Canadian govt is highly condemnable. They are simply cheating us, taking our money. This cheating has to be stopped and we have to do something about this. Each immigrant should inform their home country about the worst situation as to how the educated are treated here and tell the government in strong terms not to send people to Canada unless if they want to ruin their life and family.
There are many employment resource centers here where we can send resumes and use telephone facilities. However, who wants this. We are so qualified and we have all the experience in our field and we should be provided jobs in our fields may be if they need they can ask us to volunteer in our field for 3 months and then give us jobs. Who wants to use the ERC's they are simply waste of time. I attended those too for 3 weeks, 5 days and so on. I think this government which has cheated so many of we foreigners deserves some sort of punishment. We educated, cannot be continuing to do labor jobs. I am sure if they cheat, they will soon be cheated. Every action has equal and opposite reaction. I really think that all immigrants should return to their home countries and see how Canada prospers, they will never. They depend on immigrants for everything. See the plight of scientists, engineers, doctors and bank officers and managers driving cars and doing labor jobs, this is too dirty. If this is what they are going to do, they are never going to prosper because by cheating us, they cannot prosper, it will be downfall for them.
In US, they did recognize my qualification and after 10 minutes of phone interview gave me jobs and arranged for my visa. Did US loose, no they gained because I did a very good job, this is what they said, not me. Is Canada superior to US, I do not think. Also, if this situation continues like this, there is growing intolerance in the people and this is going to become a serious protest issue, there is going to be some reaction from the people. I also heard from one student that most of his teachers (Canadian) have very bad teaching skills but I have got excellent teaching skills as evaluated by students, but still they continue to be teachers and I, not, only because I am a foreigner. Does this not prove they are a racist? At least give me one good reason for them not to provide me a job. I say they are cheats and racists and if anyone has an answer which can please me and answer my questions, I welcome that but I do not think I would get such a reply. It is because I have stated all facts and only others are going to add more to what I said. I welcome feedbacks though.
Finally I would like to make a comment, I want that the government of Canada send five persons who are assistant professors here (and have PhDs with lots of teaching and research experiences) since 10-15 years to be sent to my country and I want them to do labor job for 5 years without making a single complaint. If all the 5 of them do it successfully, I am willing to do the same here.
