本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1, Its tuition fee was only around $7000 3 or 4 years before.
2,In addition, parents need to donate several thousand dollars each year
在今年的couse curriculum night上,一位家长问老师,what age do you expect to have sex?

  • 枫下家园 / 望子成龙 / just back from UTS open house, feel disappointed. 1. The labs and equipments are very old. 2. students are same as our children, not very polite as some people say. 3.it is a completely private school now,
tuition will be $15,000 next year. 4. Only a few students get admissions from top us universities each year. Admission rate is very low. Most students go to UT after their parents pay almost $20,000 fro them each year. Not worth it. 5. So many chinese students.
    • I don't see going to a US school is anything better than a Canadian school in the undergrad level.
    • Disagree....
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1. The labs and equipments are very old.

But they are pretty effectively and extensively utilized by the students under good supervision from outstanding teachers. With these 'old' lab equipments, UTS managed to grab gold, silver and brown medals in IOC.

      2. students are same as our children, not very polite as some people say.

F1 students have been in the school for less than 2 months. Did you notice the confidence and pride appearing in the majority? If you have talked to these 'look alike' students, you'll see the differences. They are highly spirited and intelligent souls in addition to being diligent and open. Asking how many activities they cover in a single school day, you'll be amazed.

3.it is a completely private school now, tuition will be $15,000 next year.

It has always been a private school and it is at the low tuition end, if not the lowest, amongst its type.

      4. Only a few students get admissions from top us universities each year. Admission rate is very low. Most students go to UT after their parents pay almost $20,000 fro them each year. Not worth it.

UTS is not built for feeding US universities. It is, like many other private schools, to nurture the future leaders, in a more academically inclined way. If going to US universities is your goal, you can set out an early plan and I am pretty sure you can make it.

      5. So many chinese students.

This is due to the first round of the exams, which seems pretty tough or too big of a challenge for others. Only gifted and diligent kids passed it and the reality turns out more than half of them are Chinese, like it or not. Talking with their parents, you'll realize how exceptional they are.
      • cannot agree. 1. The school charges higher and higher tuition fees, partly should be paid to upgrade these labs and equipments. In addition, many public schools can grab medals from IOC too.
        2. I really didn't see any difference. 3. UTS is not a completely private school before, it is now. Its tuition fee was only around $7000 3 or 4 years before. In addition, parents need to donate several thousand dollars each year. 4. If parents don't want their children go to top US universities, why should they spend so much money? Good students in public schools can go to UT with scholarship too. As to future leaders, most of them from top universities, no matter which high schools they come from. 5. I only saw a few native or indian students there this morning, most of volunteer students are chinese. I was told more than half of students there are Chinese.
        • Your quesiotions are basically about the worthiness of diffenret school systems: private vs. public. This is too big a question. Most of us have passed this stage.
Wenxuecity.com once had some hot discussions there with good reference. My suggestion is to get some in-person touch with students in both school systems before making your own mind.
          • In fact I have known at least two UTS students before I came to the open house. To me, they are same as other chinese students, nothing special.
The only difference is their parents, so proud of their children, everything they talk about is how good their children are. It is really annoying.

Honestly speaking, the only purpose I will send my child to UTS is to I want her to go to top US universities, because she wants to be a lawyer, I believe Harvard University is the best choice.
            • Now we are touching the core. Believe most, daren't say all, of UTS parents hope their kids to go to top U. In your case, UTS can be helpful
to prepare for lawyers as its debating club is elite, not to mention its rigorous English courses.

You are right that not every UTS student is perfect in all areas. But as a whole, it is one of the best high schools in North America.

If you go through UTS' admission procedures and get a nod at the end, you'll realize what the parents and kids must have done and understand why so they act though I am not a fan of bragging own kids. In fact, few can hide their pride -- one of the human nature. Try it yourself.
              • although you can't say all, but I believe over 90% of UTS students apply for US top universities. what made me feel disappointed is the admission rate is very low,
not much difference from some very good public schools (I mean, #admissions/#applications).

Some people suggest to just let children stay at public schools, because they can get vert high marks, and have more time to attend a variety of competitions and social activities. These competitions and activities play important roles in applications.

you have to admit UTS students spend more time in studying, which means they have less time in attending those activities.

                Any comments?
                • This is an issue being raised and discussed lately.
                • According to UTS's web site, in 2005 for UTS graduates, , 5% admited to Ivy colleges, 12% admited to US colleges.
      • " ... you'll realize how exceptional they are." ~~ how? more details? thanks.
        • I only talked with a few parents and realized everyone of them is an educationist meanwhile a realist who has pondered upon almost
all the questions posted here and elsewhere. Choosing UTS for their kids is not a random dicision but a result of years of research and comparison.
Most of them are of working class but willing to pay the cost once truly understanding what UTS is. You are welcome to participate UTS events like the annual show mentioned by Beilei here to meet the parents in person.
    • Can not agree more. 15000 can be used for the kids' university.
      • This is a realistic question every UTS parent has to answer before placing their kids in UTS entrance exam. As I know, some parents even turned the admission down
after making all the efforts in preparations and going-through the exams/interview. Bottomline is which school system you'd appreciate more, with given budget, plus many other factors.
    • More information: 12% of the graduates went to US Ivy Universities, 30% of the students came from gifted classes, 75% of the students came from public schools.
The current principle was the principle of UCC (Upper Canada College). The affiliation agreement makes the UTS can do fund raising for itself which teachers think is better than before. (really?)
      • 弄错了. only 5% admited to Ivy colleges, 12% admited to US colleges, Ivy Universities: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Univ. of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth College, Cornell.( total 8)
        • US News 2006 University Ranking: ( most reputable and acceptable ranking in US) #1 Harvard and Princeton ; #3 Yale; #4 Univ. of Pennsylvania; #9 Columbia Univ. and Dartmouth College; # 13 Cornell ; # 15 Brown Univ.

      • "在今年的couse curriculum night上,一位家长问老师,what age do you expect to have sex? 一位家长答:40. " --- sorry, i am not quiet understand this one?
        • " to start", not " to have".
      • UTS use same teaching methods for all students, no difference between gifted and non-gifted students, opposite to public schools.
        • Totally unnecessary to put your money there.
15000 is for noble private school.
          • This is a preference issue. Eg., my banker was from a noble private school. When I asked him if he got any help from his alumni
in his career path, he said no except recieving news letters saying who has become CEO, CFO, but nothing to do with him. This may be an extreme case. Truth is if I am not part of the noble society, I doubt my kid willbecome one just by attending a noble school.
More likely, my kid might be scorned or left out in a way. And it is difficult to fix.
        • There are gifted programs inside UTS. You can find it in its manual.
    • UTS is a very unique school. It is a private school that was once a branch of the University of Toronto, and that is probably why it is so expensive.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛UTS is unique from other schools since it has its own curriculum, and that is one of the reason why most students go to UTS after lack of interest from their old schools.

While appearing somewhat bland in appearance, UTS has a wide variety of labratories and resources which all students and staff in the building have access to, including the library, the numerous computer labs, science labs and the midi lab.

Students at UTS work and play in a friendly environment. UTS provides unique classes for the students such as the Romance of Antiquity class for Grade 7's, community service opportunities starting from the first year of attending the school as well as several student guidance councillors and Guidance classes for specific years.

UTS students may not want to have an education at American schools, because they are usually awarded with partial of full scholarships from U of T, which is now considered as one of the world's top 20. They also generally graduate from U of T with a bachelor degree and persue a Master degree or PhD at American Universities.

UTS might not appeal to some people, since its tuition fee seems unrewardingly high, but students there are comfortable with their peers and their teachers. It is an amazing school which helps boost not only a child's academic merits, but also aids their self-esteem, confidence and guides them through the difficult pre-teen and teenage years and leads them to a glorious future.
      • I was told it doesn't belong to UT, it is a lab school for some UT department. Currently it is completely independent.
      • UTS is a very unique private school. If you look at the fees of top private schools in Toronto, UCC $25000; The Crescent $ 21000; Havergal $ 20000; Branksome Hall $21000; UTS ohly $13000.
