Thanks for sharing. It can identify his best study style, which will be helpful for his future study.

I am wondering if you have done research on how to live with a gifted child, how to help them in terms of his study and especially his social skills. I noticed that very smart kids usually are not patient with others. He can understand things quickly but others can't. Other people may think this kid is arrogant, so I think the most difficult part for raising a gifted child is how to help him to be modest, to better understand others, and be a popular boy in his social life. Could you share your experience with us on it?

  • 枫下家园 / 望子成龙 / 寻找一种客观评价孩子智商方法的父母请看:Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - fourth edition(WISC-4),an intelligence test for children between the ages of 6 and 16。WISC generates an IQ score and is required by Gifted Program
    本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛David Wechsler is best known for developing several widely-used intelligence tests, including the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Wechsler, 1949) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (Wechsler, 1955).

    Updated versions of these tests remain popular in the 21st century (WISC-IV®, 2003; WAIS-III®, 1997) and new tests founded on Wechsler’s work continue to be developed by other researchers (e.g. Wechsler & Naglieri, 2006).

    Wechsler is also notable for his use of the deviation quotient (DQ), a technical innovation that replaced the use of mental ages in computing IQ scores. This greatly improved the utility of normative comparisons when intelligence tests are used with adult examinees (Edwards, 1994).

    The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Fourth Edition® (WISC-IV®) was published in 2003. It has been normed for use with children aged six through sixteen years and eleven months.

    It yields a full-scale IQ score and four index scores:

    (1) Verbal Comprehension (VCI, less formally refere to as the "Verbal IQ")
    e.g. similarities, vocabulary and comprehension activities
    (2) Perceptual Reasoning (PRI, less formally refere to as the "Nonverbal IQ")
    e.g. matrix reasoning, block design and picture concepts
    (3) Working Memory Index (WMI)
    e.g. letter-number sequencing and digit-span
    (4) Processing Speed Index (PSI)
    e.g. symbol search and coding.

    Registered psychologist practice in Counselling, School Psychology can administer the test.

    WISC-4 test is a great method to have a reliable intellectual profile of your child, and assists determining candiacy for a gifted program.

    My son, 8 years old, achived following scores in WISC-4 Test:

    (1) VCI: Range-> Very Superior; Percentile -> 99.9; Score -> 146
    (2) PRI: Range-> Very Superior; Percentile -> 99; Score -> 136
    (3) WMI: Range-> Upper end of average; Percentile -> 70 Score -> 108
    (4) PSI: Range-> Superior; Percentile -> 94 Score -> 123

    Full Scale IQ(FSIQ): 139

    He is attending a private school, and now we know he is a gifted child.

    His WMI score is relatively low, and the psycologist explains that the score shows that his best study style is to be instructed within a relatively smaller group.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
    • 牛哥啊,生活教会我一个事情。就是IQ高的人很难理解其他人。因为对于一般的事情,你很容易就学会了,觉得很容易,生活,事业,适应新环境都很容易,你也愿意和别人分享,
      这是很好。可是你忘了,你是特别的。对于你容易的事情,对于别人也许有不可逾越的障碍。学会理解其他人。
      所谓IQ高,高到前1%,或是千分之一,都说明,你的经验也许只对人群的前5%有用。
      要学会爱惜别人的感受。
      IQ只有人群前20%,30%,或是后50%的人也要有幸福的生活,他们从事其他的职业,也有对未来美好的期望,他们不期望做头,不期望是大牛,可是期望幸福美满的生活,可是他们也有敏感的心灵。
      每个人的孩子都是可爱的,你就在自己家高兴就是了。何必要到这儿来显摆,还期望大家的祝贺呢?我们都嫉妒的想吃了你。你怎么不知趣呢?
      • I heard that almost 50% students in gifted program are from Chinese families. Their parents do not visit Rolia? My intention is to post and hope to get social connected with them. No intention to hurt anyone in any form.
        • 这里有不少孩子在GIFTED班的家长。没看出你要交流什么。
        • My kid is in. Just go to school and socialize with other parents. Not necessary to publish.
          • Can you PM me the official link for gifted program in GTA, if there is any? Thanks!
            • I think you already know that site. www.ontariogifted.org
              One problem of the gifted program is that kids are over-confident, and that is not good for them to socialize with other kids, and not good for them to develop leadership. Being a leader, you need to ask people to follow you. Being over-confident will drive people away.
              • You are exacly right. But they prefer bigger challenge and more fun. There is nothing wrong.
              • 你讲的问题虽然在gifted children身上比较容易发生,但好的老师也会以此作为老师自己最大的challenge,从而有意识地培养孩子团结协作的精神。总体而言,gifted class的环境非常适合喜欢挑战的孩子。
                • 没错。知道就好。
                • My son was very active and that caused trouble when he was in public school. In average, we got one or two notes from school every week. It was very frustrating. But everything turns out to be different after he atended private school.
                  Now he is in a private school, he enters a gifted program to learn robotics and he got 3 outstanding prices.
                  • 他已经在gifted program了为什么还要做测试?
                    • Private school's so-called gfted program doesn't require any test, if teacher recommends, then you go. I would like to monitor something using a commonly adopted standard.
      • 同意你的观点。IQ高不意味任何事情,不意味额外的成功也不意味高处不胜寒的凄凉。IQ实在只是一个人为创造出来的指标,用以统计分析或许有些意义,就不要奢望其他了。
      • 言论自由啊. 别以己心度他心. 顶牛哥.
        • Welcome every post that is helpful and from kind nature, and I will accept any advice or critics if it comes from good nature too.:-)
    • 统计显示大学学生成绩和成就的最大相关因素不是IQ. 还是好好培养其他的方面。先天不足,后天补,也能成才。先天好,染上坏习惯,一样不成才。
      • bright student and gift student is different.

      • 你可以让他尝试很多艺术和体育,就是一些他/她不擅长的事情,需要努力坚持和练习才能做好的事情。这样他/她才能理解自己的局限,并理解努力和纪律才是重要的。集体的体育,比如足球,就需要配合,也可以考虑。
        女孩子的话,比如舞蹈,集体的体操都需要配合,可以让他们参加。
        • Good idea! Thanks.
        • 我这孩子上大课注意力集中是个问题,还有就是Ego大。
          • EGO大就是你鼓励的。你向来鼓励自我感觉良好。我告诉你西方的领导就是要服务好,才能获得选票和支持,也同样适用于公司的董事会和管理层。多培养孩子的谦卑比自信好。
            • 完了,他确实像我。
            • 最好是内心自信,外在谦卑。不过不管怎样,这和EGO大是两码事。
    • 牛哥,请问私校的孩子哪里去作这些测试?儿子学校的老师跟我提过这事,可是我不知道哪里去做。
      • Find a psycologist, $500-600.
        • 从你的链接看到了,谢谢。
    • 牛哥是个乐于助人的好同学,理应表扬。
