My daughter has the similar issue, stubborn and talking tough, but fortunately no violence. My understanding is she learned this from me. As the parent, I tried to learn controlling my anger first. Here is what I did to help her and myself.

1. Open communication, I told my daughter she can discuss anything with me, but no tough talking and stubborn behavior. From the discussion, I can understand why she is acting like that.
2. If she has the bad behavior second time at the same day, she will get the timeout. I told her I would get time out too if I do the same thing.
3. If it happens the third time, she will lose some favorite activity this week, like swimming or skating. She loves swimming or skating so she usually takes care of her chances.

My main points here are, kids learn from the parents. Try to become a good model. Second, set up the disciplines and act them consistent, even to yourself. Third, communicate with the kids and learn the cause why they do that.
