Thanks, the "last step" is ---

The "last step" is the step to INSTALL DEVICES, Win 2000 threw the following message:
"Setup is detecting and install devices on your computer
Please wait while setup detects and installs devices such as your keyboard and mouse. This will take several minutes....."
After that, the screen became totally green with 3 lines of "'''''''''''''''''''''"and got frozen.
I tried removing my sound card and modern before I installed win2000 again but I got the same bad luck as before.
Do you have any idea? Thank you in advance!

  • 工作学习 / IT技术讨论 / I can't install windows 2000 in my computer, can somebody tell me why?
My computer was bought in July 2000, Pentium III (667 MHz), Memory 256M, Asus motherboard, and other component are all very fashion at that time. It can run windows Me and/or NT, but I don't want all of them but Windows 2000 server/professional. I have tried several times to install win 2000, but it always failed at the last step and the computer became to green screen with many lines of "=========".

I know a lot of computers of my friends have much low level or old version components but they can still run win2000, can you let me know what was going on with my computer and how to fix this problem?

As far as I know, I used to move back and forth between Ottawa and Toronto with my computer delievered by the professional instrument moving companies, may this caused any damage to my computer?

My emai is yuanguoqing@yahoo.com, thank you very much in advance!

      • Thanks, but......
Thank you very much for reply. But my video card and RAM are both in good condition since my computer is working well in windows Me and NT. My hard disk is also OK definitely. Actually, I failed in installing Win 2000 in the last step when the system told me it was checking my devices, and then suddenly, the screen became green (like in DOS) with several lines of "====" and was frozen there forever, without any error message.
Maybe something wrong with my BIOS? or drivers of some devices?
THank you again for help, sorry for the bothering!
        • Possible problem - BIOS provided by Disk vendor (Maxtor?)
You might have some BIOS provided by disk vendor to provide support for hard disk bigger than 32GB, MAXTOR hard disk provide a easy BIOS for bigger hard disk (like 60GB). If this is the case, you need to installed the newest bios for your mother board which will enable big hard disk support, then remove EASY bios. It happens to me. Hope this helps.
          • My motherboard is ASUS P3V4X. I have downloaded the newest bios version p3v41005 and updated my bios, it didn't work, either.

My hard disk is fujisu 20G.
I don't know Bios very well, can I use the Maxtor bios no matter mator is not the vendor of the devices in my computer?

              Microsoft Windows versions 2000 , 2000 SP1 , 2000 SP2 , Professional

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Windows 2000 on either a Fujitsu MPG3102AT or Fujitsu MPG3204AT hard disk on a computer that has the Intel 815 chipset, the installation procedure does not report damaged files after Setup copies the initial files and restarts the computer.

              CAUSE
This problem occurs because the _STM method of the basic input/output system (BIOS) that sets the Ultra DMA (UDMA) speed for both the controller and the hard disk does not change speeds after being set. When this occurs, the controller and the hard disk run at different speeds, which clips the data flow and causes incorrect data to be written on large files. This problem typically occurs if you extend the BIOS to include ATA 100 features on a computer that has an earlier chipset.

              WORKAROUND
To temporarily work around this problem, you can change the cable that connects the hard disk to the controller to the 40-channel cable that is used with ATA 33 drives. When you do this, the drive can run at ATA 33 speeds.

A longer-term solution for manufacturers is to flash the BIOS so that the BIOS initially sets the UDMA cycle time to 0x14 (20) when the computer starts for the first time. This causes the Atapi.sys file to leave the drive running at UDMA 100 timings so that the hard disk and the controller run at the same speed.

Windows 2000 accepts values less than 0x14 and remains at UDMA 100 speeds, but the drive and BIOS need this value to continue to work reliably.

The third-party products discussed in this article are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.

              STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
              • Thank you!! Neatbook! My harddisk is exactly MPG3204AT (20G), maybe my hard disk made me so much trouble.

Sorry for bothering again: How to flash the BIOS so that the BIOS initially sets the UDMA cycle time to 0x14 (20) when the computer starts for the first time??
I can't find UDMA from my bios, that is why I am asking this question.

        • You've got the damned compatible problem!
But if you really love win2k and don't mind trouble, try my hints one by one. I wish you are only one try away.

          1. Are you using win2k sp2 on you PC? (better to have, but not mandatory)
          2. Is there any hardware older than 1999 connected? If yes, temp remove.
Not sure? check win2k HCL on microsoft website.
          3. In your bios, load default bios settings
          4. In your bios, disable anti-virus protection
          5. In your bios, power mgnt, disable ACPI, just use APM even _nothing_.
          6. Upon booting setup CD, when you see "press F6 to ...", dont press F6,
press "F5", then select "standard PC". Then, let it loads as normal.

Wait with a cup of coffee in hand :-)

          Good luck!
          • Thank you very much for help, I will try your way now, hopefully it will work, I will let you know.
          • 看来是专家,能否帮我解答为何win2k/winxp半夜会自动开机启动?如何去掉?
            • 算不上什么家:-) 据我所知,windows本身是不会自动启动的,建议检查你的BIOS中的"wake on LAN", "wake on Modem", "RTC on" 等设置。
              • BIOS的设置都disable掉了。问题依旧。我的机器装有windows98,me,nt.都没有问题。只是在win2k,winxp上shutdown才有问题。为什么?
                • 看过日本的(午夜凶铃)吗?
