Please the below letter from YAMAHA CANADA OFFICE
Dear Mr. Li,
I've been asked by Mr. Ales to respond to your question.
1) A piano is a musical instrument with over 8000 moving parts. Many of which are made of maleable materials such as wood. Because of this, it takes some time before the piano actually settles and requires some technical preparation. This is best done at the dealership.
In Europe, all pianos (all major manufacturers) are unpacked before they reach the dealership. US manufactured pianos are not even boxed from the factory for US delivery to delivery dealerships. However they are boxed for shipping to Canada.
Having said all that, some dealerships have allowed some customers to receive pianos in their original shipping crate. This is a practice we do not encourage because the product would not be in their optimum performance state. However, Yamaha does have one of the best reputations for high quality instruments that require less pre-delivery technical preparation than other manufacturers.
Also, every piano has a different personality. This is an emotional investment and it is encouraged to consumers that they try out the piano that they will like to purchase. This can only be done at the dealership. Similiarly, one would need to test-drive a car before they purchase their new vehicle.
2) Every piano has a serial number on the plate. In the case of the U1, it is located in the upper right hand corner of the plate.
In other words once you receive it, you'll have it. If you buy a particular piano by trying it out at the dealership, you will have the serial number automatically as it is located directly on the piano. If you buy a piano without trying it, you will get the serial number only when you receive the product.
3) This is true. Yamaha Canada is a wholesaler and distribution company. In fact the only piano company with a distribution office in Canada. Other manufacturers are located in the US or aboad. We sell only to authorized piano dealers in Canada and not directly to the public.
4) If you buy a U1 this year, it would have been manufactured in late 2007. There is approximately a 4-6 month leatime from beginning of production to final destination in Canada. The U1 is a popular model therefore we cycle new product through all the time.
5) These questions can only be answered by the dealerships. We do not own or have control over their business practices. We only authorize them to sell our product.
I hope our answers have met your satisfaction.
