I have been watching DVD movies (both Blu-ray and standard DVD) on home theatre projector for the last 3 yrs. there is no comparison between a 120" screen and a 52" flat panel. you do need to have a dark room, though.

however most family's basement should be just fine. a 720P projector's picture quality is close to 1080P flat panel. if you go with 1080P projector the picture quality will be much better. the price of projector has come down significantly. for the price of a high-end flat panel (for example, Sony XBR 52") you can get a top quality home theatre projector such as Sony VPL VW60. that being said, if all you watch is only TV news or program from Talent Vision, etc. then a home theatre is an overkill and you should just get a entry-level flat panel.

No matter what you choose, make sure to use HDMI or DVI Cable and HD 1080p or 720p video signal to get the best picture. Something Like to use SP3 or Blue ray player or HTPC. digital TV box with HDMI output.
