I think your thinking is quite structural, which is quite suitable for MBA. See inside for my suggestion.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛In 2002,rlz7213 (Rachel), is facing a career decision of whether she should pursue an MBA degree in one of the 2 prestigious Canadian MBA programs, or accept a job offer of business development position with ananual salary of CND 25k.

To address the above issues, we have three alternatives:
· Alternatives 1: Accept the job offer
· Alternatives 2: Go to McGill for MBA
· Alternatives 3: Go to UBC for MBA

In order to justify which alternative to choose in order to achieve her career goal, the following criteria are adopted:
· Profitability: including current income and potentials
· Cash flow: the ability survive and finance the MBA study
· Return on investment:
· Risk: Opportunity cost of spend 2 years in school
· Competitive advantage
· Timing—Is it the right time to go back to school?

According to my analysis, our suggestion to the management( Rachel)is , IT IS TOTALLY UP TO YOU.

I am just kidding and try to use the frame work for tomorrow's exam; hope it can help you further structure your thinking, hehe. ( BTW, I am an MBA at IVEY, so you know what was my choice).

  • 工作学习 / 求学深造 / Job offer, Rotman, UBC, McGill, which to choose? It's so hard for me to make a decision. Welcome discussion and feel free to speak up your opinions.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Job offer: junior level, training in different dept for total 2.5 years, then company is planning to put me into business development (kind of marketing job), starting salary 25K / year with benefit etc.. Big European freight forwarding company, stable business.

    MBA offer: UBC tuition $28k / 15month; Rotman $48k/22month; Mcgill $10k/2year.

    Pros and Cons:

Job: Pros: stable income, no need to relocate, chances to transfer to other offices in the world, even in China

Job: Cons: marketing is too hard for Chinese to succeed; I am not an agreesive person, personally think such a job is stressful

MBA: Pros: reputable degree, chances to land a job in China with not bad pay; might start in a new field such as finance; 2 years to polish English and other skills

MBA Cons: no guaranteed job after graduation, expensive tuition, have to relocate to another city (i am in Calgary); no background in finance (how to write a strong resume by then?!)

I would love to hear advice from people in the same pool as me. It's an old topic but it may change our whole life. Thank you.

    Undergraduate: Renmin Univ
    Major: Trade & Economics

    • MBA but don't choose UBC.
      • Why not ubc? Any detail?
    • up
    • 如果你没有北美工作经验的话(不知道你以前的工作地点在哪里), 还是先工作1-2年, 哪怕1年, 然后可以再去读MBA, 如果那是你的发展方向的话
      • Look, we have someting in common.
    • Married or yet? ---- Teasing. Not a clear picture about the job offered. Personally believe anyway MBA is somthing luxuary which helps one stepping ahead further. You cannot secure a position by simply claiming
Hey I'm MBA. That's why I would accept the job if being put in your foot. All in all, depends on your plan in next 5 years. Looks to me you're also considering to return China soon?
    • IF the job is also in Toronto, part-time at York would be a choice...

    • Even today, MBA is too much in china, after two years, it definitly can't get even a job offer. Take the job for sure.
    • I think we have similar situation. I am currently working in a software company(55k), and I've been working in Canada for two years. Now I want to make a change to my life.
I am now in a GMAT class preparing the exam. I expect I can get admission letters next year, and I will go for MBA definitely. But the most important of all is to pick a reputable B-shool to take the education. Otherwise it's not worthy to give up the current job for a crappy MBA. Right?

By the way, I am from Renmin University too. Information shool.

      Good luck.
