My daughter is 5 years old. I will not take spelling as a priority until she is able to read very fluently and independently. She will have 1 year to develop her reading skills. Then I will encourage her to write.
Spelling, in my opinion, is not an impendent and separate part in literacy and should be combined with writing. When a child have read enough and got familiar with English and wants to express her in written language, she will master spelling when she is writing.
My daughter has math assignment every day and I ask her to write the date on the sheet after she finishes the assignment. She does that every day. Now she has known how to write “November” and “December” in a date format. So I just repeat what I have said that you will get spelling through writing.
My personal opinion for your reference.
