The Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) provides a unique electronic signature for each car by matching a specifically coded ignition key with a sensor located in the vehicle. The vehicle operates only with a correctly coded key, and attempts to hot-wire the ignition will fail.
Unlike other systems, PATS uses low frequency radio transmission instead of physical contact to help ensure reliability over years of service. Ford has received one patent and has others pending on the system.
PATS will be available on the newly redesigned 1996 Mercury Sable LS and is one of a host of Lincoln-Mercury's safety and security features designed to offer extra protection to both the vehicle and its occupants.
The system was developed by Ford Automotive Components Division.
"This technology puts the amateur out of business and makes it so difficult for professionals that we expect they'll simply avoid trying to steal our PATS-equipped cars," said Frank Macher, vice president and general manager, Ford Automotive Components Division.
PATS was first available on Ford of Europe vehicles in 1993. It is now in use on more than 500,000 Ford cars and trucks in Europe, where it has been very successful in deterring thefts.
A miniature transponder that contains an antenna and an integrated circuit is embedded in the system's ignition key. It uses wireless, non-contact radio frequency transmission technology to transfer a code between the key and the car.
There are 72 quadrillion possible codings, making it feasible to provide each vehicle with a unique code.
If the codes match, the module sends a signal through the vehicle's multiplex wiring system to the engine's electronic control that allows the engine to operate. If the code is incorrect, or if there is no code transmitted because a counterfeit key has been used, the engine will be disabled.
PATS offers several advantages over other theft-protection systems. These include:
Unalterable codes.
Battery-free system operation.
Ease of operation. The system is virtually invisible to the driver, who needs to do nothing more than place the key in the ignition.
Lower insurance premiums. State law in 11 states mandates discounts for vehicles equipped with an engine immobilizer system.
PATS components are manufactured in Markham, Ontario. Keys will arrive at the Ford assembly plants pre-coded from the supplier.
In addition to the Mercury Sable, PATS will be available on the 1996 Ford Taurus and Ford Mustang.
