Your employer will notify you if their Software Assurance coverage expires.

I don't think on a regular basis my company would share which employees are on the book with Microsoft.

Altough each account can only purchase one license, they can't even control if someone bought Office 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010 (4 licenses) rather than 1 license.
