Setbacks On The Multiple Fronts

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Last night I had an interview with a company in China, when the interviewer told me he will get back to me in 2 weeks, I know how it's gonna turn out. I expected RMB600K, it will be too much for them. this is the most recent setback, which added to the frustration and tiredness I have already had from the US front, life is definitely not good recently.

The US market has given me a big blow, I have run into the situations that I have never been through in the past, it's really an eye-opening journey, the reality is ugly.

1) Amzone

Got first round of interview, felt it went well, but no news yet, hr acted very weird, she actually approached me in the first place, sent me an email asking for availability for interview, told me the hiring manager was very interested in speaking with me, the role is more of infrastructures on the server side, due to its big name, I thought it was worth to give it a try and responded with the time slots, then waited for around almost a week, no confirmation was received from hr,I sent around 3 emails from my different email addresses to check with her (just in case my email went to her trash bin), finally she replied and set up an interview with the hiring manager without any explanation about the delay. the interviewer told me I will get another interview in a couple days, after the interview, the same thing happened, I followed up, got no message back.
I suspected the reason is I responded a little late to her first email, made her feel I was not that into that role.

What surprised me was the interviewer came directly from India without even US study experience (I checked his Linkedin), which seemed to me he is the guy shipped here by India ICC, the company which imports many IT guys every year directly from India and applys H1B for them, mitbbs has a lot of posts about this, I was shocked and thought only the best guys were working for Amazon.

2) Google

Got first round of interview with the team peer, hr told me it was a technical interview, but she didn't ask any technical questions, all questions like one question leads to another question to the other question: how to deal with project sponsor who wants to cut schedule from 9 months to 3 months, how to deal with the one who insist his request is urgent, how to deal with project sponser who insist using the other tool instead of the one described in job description....it caught me off guard, totally.

What surprised me was the interviewer spoke poorer English than mine, but the role seems to be a functional role.

3) PWC

Manager role, got 2 interviews with 2 directors after prescreen with hr, confirmed onsite date, but event was cancelled this week, apparently I felt it's hr who cancelled this event, 2 hrs dealt with me, the primary screened me and told me they will fly me to NYC for onsite interview, confirmed me with a few questions, asked what is my preferred location, I told him first one is NYC, second Atlanta, then other place, he is located in NC, he actually wants me to say Raleigh, NC, (I applied for this role in NYC, not sure why he called me from NC and asked me in the prescreen why I want to go to NC), I obviously felt he was not happy, what made him even unhappier was I increased my salary expectation by 10K in the phone call that he confirmed my onsite date. another hr sent me an email, asked me my personal information for flight booking last Monday, I didn't get confirmation this Tuesday, and no one told me anything, I followed up, the second hr told me the event cancelled but no reason and she will contact the primary guy then get back to me, she didn't even respond my email to my follow up email in which I asked what made the event cancelled.

4) Deloitte

HR sent me an email asking for availability for a discussion, I got back to her with the available time slots at my end, she didn't respond, after one week, she sent me another email again, I responded with a simple line, she didn't get back to me any more even though I followed up, I still don't know why until today.

Another thing that I didn't expected is there is limited room to grow in terms of salary expectation, which makes my job hunting even more difficult. almost all non-manager roles in the states of east coast and west coast can get you $100K above, but for me, this is not something I'm targetting any more.

It looks like there is still a long way to go, Jesus, life is really tough.

      • I'm trying to write in plain English and cut the long story short, the experience makes me understand how important it is hr plays a role in the hiring process
          • I didn't quite get it, could you elaborate?
            • In english?
              • Whatever floats your boat, I got you, haha.
                  • Right, even a big block of Chinese could turn me away, I don't have patience to read a long story in Chinese. you feel overwhelmed, I think so do many other rolian, thanks for your advice
                      • English comes more handy for me, I speak English slower than you do
        • From what you described, I cant determine if hr has played any big role in the process. My impression is you might not be the best match they were looking for.
          • 3 companies could be that reason, but not PWC, which was too obvious for me, my hunch told me that at the moment I hung up the phone when he confirmed my onsite date and asked other questions
            • True. Since RTP was not your 1st choice, and you asked for more. They might also have another preferred candidate.
        • I have been worked and interviewed for in some of giant tach firms, i found that sometimes the attitude or some kind of chemistry matters more.
          • Right, some hrs are very helpful, some are very arrogant. I even played a joke with some hrs. for example, I was talking about a unionized company in Toronto, I played a joke with her,
saying my company is under restructure for why leaving the company question, I used a word, Better safe than sorry, she was laugh and set up an interview very quick for me (within the same day other than she told me in a week over the phone), another story is I was talking to a hr in NY, I told her I was once a "foot soldier", she was also laugh and the interview was going very smoothly
    • Wow! What a nice and long cream post!Could you tell your story before a microphone and record it for English forum?
      • Thanks Detective, ha, I'm not using microphone, I type it
      • I checked a few staff in Amazon on LinkedIn, they all came from India directly without the study experience in US. ICC imports many IT guys from India every year. which really destroyed my respect for Amazon
      • Thanks, this may not be a bad thing, the roles I applied for Google and Amazon are not senior level roles, I'm having some manager roles in the process which could be better than the big guys.
    • One thing I forgot to mention is all the India agents are not reliable, many India agents submitted my resume, but I got no interviews through them, not a single one, now I completely ignore them
    • I have to say, it is not your issue.
The market is saturated with too many strong candidates right now, especially in California. You probably know the layoffs from Nokia, let alone Broadcom,
and those guys from RIM in Canada who want to look for jobs in US. It is said that Qualcomm will have layoff soon. So you might need patience. Good luck to you.
      • Thanks, the competition is fierce in California. it may take much longer than I expected, I hope I can leave here before the cruel winner comes.
      • Thanks, I had some roles which fit pretty well, but they couldn't "afford", this is something I didn't expect in the past, There was one in Albany NY I just turned down this week, I appreciated the hr very much, coz she just didn't want to give up
tried to convince me back and forth bunch of times through the emails.
      • LZ may consider the technical writer career roadmap, IMHO.
        • Thanks for your valuable advice, I would do that if time permits, just for fun, not a professional writer
      • Thanks, I hope I can share more interesting stories going forward.
