it depends on how hard the water is in your area. please read through this tips. Most people just do not clean even once. In theory,the tank needs to be clean once a year, but few people do that.

Thanks for your response and tips on the link. I would probably try to empty the tank via the drain valve in the next summer. I guess my heater tank wasn't flushed since 1992.

actually you're qualified to get a free-replacement from the renting company. Call them to demand a new one.
