Dual-core support is at operating sys level, application should not know it at all. But for database complex query, sometimes you have to shut off multi-core option in order to run query without headlock, which is mostly occured on SQL Server.

    • Two comments: (1) Dual-core is two core within a single CPU-not two CPU; (2) It's up to OS rather than app's duty to make the full use of dual-core CPU so theoretically all software can be benefit from the CPU.
      • You are right. So the two CPU sharing the same memory, or they have separate memory? Anyone knows whether current windows system has already supported this dual-core mode or not? I haven't googled it yet.
        • lol, u really high-level dummy!
            • u r wrong! the new dual cpu can share human's memory!
            • LOL! "破处"
        • 我的Laptop是Dual Core的Dell M90,内存2G,但是内置操作系统是Windows XP Professional。上面有个标签说是Windows Vista Capable。Dual Core的系统应该是可以运行目前流行的Windows XP。内存结构应该是和原来一样,只是现在新计算机,内存一般是1G以上。
          • I wrote c code for Cray before using their Multiple Process Interface. I found if the target is shared memory dual-core, it has higher potential to make code dead-lock. dual-code with separate memory is faster, but cost more.
            • dual-core=dual-code=memory-share. I believe your memory does not just limit to these, you have more potential and brighter future!
不是一个可靠的teammate,not to say team lead. :-)
                • seems you know the word Cray, then do you know the difference between NUMA and SMP? if not, you can cut ur #2 now.
                  • I worked three years in a university research group offering high performance computing test for Cray and IBM when I was in the US.
                    • so what? you're goldplated? then what? 7!
                      • Haha, that means I am 001. :-) You know it by using a good ID.
                        • ∷∷∷.
            • True...when I was doing coding with C, my boss always said C is strong enough and no bug at all. After I moved, he always compalined C became bug maker...Actually good to know you are not acting coder any more.
              • C is the most flexible lang because of pointer, it is very close to assembly lang, which is based on hardware, but it brings lots of bugs for sure. If you write driver code, C is the most efficient option to choose. Sys Eng uses C lots more than App Eng.
                • well said. if you understood C pointers in that level, you could make drive/ apps code strong enough to use dual-cpu or dual-core CPU instead of using microsoft standard system call.:-)
                  • If you call Win API, you are actually doing application dev. The vendors of the CPU offer low level C API library which handles those headache multi-thread-multi-processor things. For some challenging applications, they still use single CPU for safe.
                    • Well. seem you do understand everything. buy something fits is always No.1 shopping policy. Then.. you just want ppl here waste time to raise your post up? Anyway, I did.
                      • It is so annoying some ppl don't try to answer question, but repeatedly prefer to abuse requester's credibility, which is very ugly manner on this forum. Thanks!
        • ...
1.For thoes people doing video editing, multi-threaded applications and some multitasking ..2.Windows operating system called the 'scheduler' will manage and assign CPU to what program to be running at any given time.3. However, if you are running a single program and it is not "multi-threaded", there won't a benefit from more than one CPU or core.
          • I know what you said, but the so-called "multi-threads" does not mean the schduler has the knowledge or ability to assign different threads to different CPUs. It may just put them into queue and arrange their execution based on priority management.
            • Certainly, if your application have nothing to do...no need dual-core or dual-CPU
              • Dual-core support is at operating sys level, application should not know it at all. But for database complex query, sometimes you have to shut off multi-core option in order to run query without headlock, which is mostly occured on SQL Server.
        • HT.
        • As I mentioned above, it's SINGLE CPU with two core rather than TWO CPU so obviously the two cores will be sharing the same set of MAIN memory but having separate cache.
Personally I don' t think it makes too much sense fro home/office purpose. Even large commercial software package won't benefit from the dual-core too much simply 'coz the performance of hard drive is the bottle neck rather than CPU. So I would say the only beneficary of this kind of CPU would be those computation-intensive programs but not too much data to read from hard drive
    • Microsoft admitted that "Game performance may be poor on a Windows XP-based computer that is using a dual-core processor". Most games are written without multiple-CPU in mind. Also, better download Windows patches for your dual-code PC. See link.
      • dual-core or dual-code, that's a question. What a manager's mind is? dummy!
I HAVE SOLID EE & COMS BACKGROUND.
Dual CPU Core has two CPU Cores, they have their own L1 Caches, and both share Bus Interface and L2 Caches. Do I need to tell you that the so-called Cache is Memory?
      • well, I only know either "dual CPU" or "dual core". Never heard so-call "Dual CPU Core ",so confused.
          • .if I were a manager, I would think how to improve the apps performance instead of complaining sales. I am assuming that 's why you post this question.
          • Just some kind of IT buzzar word so simply leave it unless you wanna spend every penny within your budget for your company or xb for urself. In my case, Eclipse takes such a looooong time to start but if I disabled McAfee ...
            • You can stop McAfee scanning certain types of files, for example, .jar. it is useless to scan those java files. If you totally shut down McAfee, I would be sad for your IT manager. Security policy becomes a void.
    • It is so annoying some ppl don't try to answer question, but repeatedly prefer to abuse requester's credibility, which is very ugly manner on this forum.
why did you say "现在新推出的"?
Dual-Core CPU is not Dual CPU. more detail inside...
CPU. So if you were talking about desktop PC then I'm 100% sure it falls into this category and from end user's perspective we don't need to worry about it's dual-core or not - it's up to OS's responsibility to make the best use of CPU. Otherwise, if you were talking about server or multi-processor system, it's such a big topic that the only word I can say is yes, it could be categorized as shared memory, non-shared memory, shared disk; SMP versus ??? (sorry, I cannot remember). If this was the case, sometimes paralell programming is needed but more importantly, dedicated OS is must. As for C programming language, my comment would be, the tool is just as good as the person who use it... For me, I used to write a virus which rebooted my PC from time to time but actually I was hoping to develop a command parser at the very begining of my IT life (not career) - really a shame!
It is two processor cores on one die。
The benefit will come for users who multitask. As in a dual processor system there is a second processor core to share the load either in balanced form or by itself. Programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, are SMP aware and are much faster on a dual processor system。There is some load balancing of non-SMP applications but not as efficiently as those written for multithreading.

Generally speaking, running programs on dual-core home PC would be faster than single-core home PC. I am just curious: Is there any reliable benchmark test results?
