Yes you can start working and get paid before SSN. I got SSN after 6 weeks of work.

They will pay you retroactively. They cannot pay you without your SIN.

I am sure my answer is correct because I got it. :) My HR called IRS (or whoever) and they were told to use a fake number, (something like 900 00 0000) in payroll, and pay me the check.

Each rep will give you a different answer just like the CRA. The rep I asked said I cannot get paid (that's what my company did after they consulted with their lawyers). They paid me retroactively after I got my sin.

Alright. Maybe US and Canada treat that differently? The question was asked about SSN, not SIN...

Fine SSN. I meant in the US, not Canada. That was my experience when I moved to the US.

She would have difficulty to get a banking account, phone etc. without a SIN.
