From a teacher's point of view :Kumon focuses on computational skills. The students from my class who attented Kumon are very good at number sense and numeration strand, but not very good at problem solving.

You are mostly right except for the last statement...from a Kumon instructor's point of view, problem solving的能力实际上是和小孩的语言理解能力有关,所以会建议小孩同时修reading subject。

want to know how do they charge for the course, and are there any courses fit for 6-7 year old kids?

Agree. Many students in my daughter's class attend Kumon, but most of them are still not good at math.

If you can,try to find a private tutor for her. Kumon is not cheap considering most of the instructors are high school students and you only get to do worksheets. Their language worksheets are not bad. I was not happy when they asked my kid to repeat the work he had done. Kumon only has so much worksheets for each level.

1. assistant =/= instructor, and the high-school students are just assistants; 2. practice makes perfect, just like playing instruments.

Fron a teacher's point of view :Good math teaching is the combination of conceptual understanding and procedural proficiency. Worksheets and drills alone do not enhance problem solving skills . Procedural profiency should be embedded in the context of problem solving.

Anyone tried Sylvan? It seems a competitor of Kumon. How is it like?

My kid's current toturis a private school. She puts together materials talored to my kid's needs. I know all the workbooks on the market ( in bookstores) but have never seen the stuff she has used. And SHE TEACHES!!! Not just ask the kid to work on himself. I am MUCH MUCH happier with her. So with private tutors, I guess the challenge is not easy to find a good one. It took me a while to find this one.
