which kind of cable modem? If RCA, you don't need IP assignment, just install modem driver? check ur device manager.

thanks first! The modem model is HM200c of Ericsson, provided by Rogers.I notice a USB MAC address and an Ethernet address on it. When I use Ethernet interface and Win2k, Internet connection is ok. After I released Ethernet IP, and connected to USB interface with a notebook and win98, it didn't work.
