枫下家园 / 望子成龙 / My girl is on Gr 5 now. She started here from Gr 4 and still in ESL. Her school has French Immersion program and asks for enrollment to late FI that starts on Gr 6. She'd like to go late FI.I don't recommend. My concern is that she still needs a lot work on her English (She got B in reading and C in writing last term). She really wants to be in and begged me hardly. How should I do? Any suggestions, especially from parents whose kids are in FI. Thanks

I asked her the same question. She said that is one of the reason. Another reason is she likes French and it sounds better. I asked her if she would go FI if her friends will stay in English classes. She thought a bit and said 'Yes'.

Talk to her teacher. I have feeling that if she really wants to do it you should give her the chance:)

Just got a phone call from my girl's school. She was accepted to the late FI program, dumb! I was hoping the program is full. I talked with her yesterday.Basically, i don't recommend her to go because a. french is not as useful as English and Chinese. It's good for her to master Chinese well instead of French. b. She just came here for over a year and still is in ESL. She needs to work for her English. Otherwise, she won't get out of ESL once she goes high school. I also promise her that if she can stay in English class, i would find a french tutor for her. She still insist to go FI. Any idea from anybody?

Why just let her go and find a English tutor or out school program for her. You can also set a condition that she has to work hard to learn English or go back to english class. When she is happy, she can learn lot of more.
